Did having weekly chores as kid keep you from getting out of debt as an adult?

By Shawn Frank

Did having weekly chores as kid keep you from getting out of debt as an adult?

Every parent strives to teach their children about accountability, responsibility, and that actions have consequences.  The tasks begin simply enough; make your bed and bring in the mail every day and you’ll get an allowance.  Ah, the first taste of financial freedom, how we long for those tax free days now.  But I digress. We were given lessons early on to teach us to be accountable for our actions; talk back to your parents and lose your TV privileges, if you were really bad (and a child of the 60s and 70s) you also got the wooden spoon!   As we got older the responsibilities got bigger and so did the punishments; come home past curfew and no car for a month.  Ouch!

Taking out the Garbage and Making Your Bed

So by the time we were old enough to start getting credit, we were mature enough to use it responsibly, in theory.  And we use it responsibly.  In the beginning your bills we’re paid off every month.  And if you couldn’t pay it off in full at the end of the month the consequences didn’t seem so bad, you just pay a little interest on the balance owing.  No harm, no foul.  As time went on, life happened, so to pay for stuffed you charged it.  Now sometimes you couldn’t make any payment at the end of the month, so you were charged a late fee along with that interest on the balance. But here’s the silent consequence you don’t see coming. Those late fees and all the additional interest adds up. It also affects your credit rating. So now you owe even more but you can’t get a loan to pay it off.  So, your payments are now higher and your cash flow is dwindling.  Kind of makes you long for the days when you’re biggest responsibilities were taking out the garbage and making your bed.

With Age Comes Wisdom

Because you were taught responsibility early on you try to honor your commitments and pay your bills on time.  But as your debt grows your life shrinks until your paycheque barely covers life’s bare necessities or the minimum payments to your creditors.  But you’re a responsible person, you’re trying to do the right thing.  You’re embarrassed by your debt, humiliated, and scared you’re never be free of it.  But remember, actions have consequences so when you are ready to get real help, DEBT HELP, the consequence of that action includes peace of mind, hope, and a positive financial future.
