Back to School Debt Education

By Shawn Frank

Back to School Debt Education

Back to school is a favorite time of year for many parents.  Getting their kids ready for another year of education; reading, writing, and arithmetic.  But there is more to going back to school then buying new clothes, back packs, and school supplies.  It’s a great time to sit down with your kids and impart some of your own world weary wisdom.  If you are a parent struggling with debt this is a perfect time to start a different conversation with your kids, a conversation about money.

Life Lesson #1

No doubt your kids have watched you whip out your credit card, they may have even been present when it’s been declined.  To save face you probably blamed it on the machine.  So lesson number one is important: credit cards are not free money.  Your kids see you using them, but do they see you making the payments?  Do they see how hard you work to make enough money to pay all of your bills and put a roof over their heads?  Do they see your stress and worry when you can’t make all your payments at the end of the month, when you have to borrow money from their grandparents just to buy groceries.  Of course not, as a parent you want to protect your kids from all that ugliness.  But in your desire to protect them are you setting them up to repeat your mistakes?

Life Lesson #2

It’s okay to let your kids know you are human.  It’s okay to tell them about debt.  Life is expensive and the sooner your kids learn to budget and save for the things they really want, the less chance they will follow in your debt filled shoes.  And if they’ve earned these things for themselves, they’re going to appreciate it and have pride in the accomplishments.

Life Lesson #3: Debt Help

It’s okay to ask for help.  When your debt is spiraling out of control show your kids that you’re willing to stand up and fight back.  Show them that you’re not going to let debt control your life or their future any longer.   4 Pillars Debt Solutions has been helping Canadians reduce their debt since 2002. In fact over 97% of their clients have successfully completed their debt restructuring plans; making 4 Pillars an industry leader in Canada.
