Debt and Quicksand: Struggling to stay afloat

By Gurinder Dhaliwal

Debt and Quicksand: Struggling to stay afloat

In the movies, the guy who falls into quick sand is immediately sucked under unless the hero shows up and uses a tree branch to pull him out in the nick of time.  Unlike ‘movie’ quicksand, real quicksand has more in common with your debt.  In reality, when you step into quicksand, it’s your frantic struggle to get out that causes you to sink in deeper.  The same thing happen when you’re in debt.

Relax, it could save your life

Has this ever happened to you? The more you struggle to get control of your debt the deeper you seem to sink. It’s almost as if your debt doesn’t want to let you go!  The deeper in debt you get, the more you start to panic, making rash decision that end up doing more damage than good.  Where quicksand in concerned, any good Boy Scout can tell you the secret to getting out is to relax and stay calm.  Your body is less dense than the sand so if you lay back and in a swimming motion move toward the edge you will eventually be able to roll yourself on to hard ground.

Believe it or not, getting out of debt isn’t nearly as strenuous, and you’ll even have someone there with a branch to help pull you out.   When you feel yourself getting sucked deeper into debt you become desperate to get it under control. As a result you’re vulnerable to people who claim to want to help but are working in their own best interests.  Some of them may actually be working for your creditors or they take advantage of your situation and what you think is a quick fix to your debt could end up costing you dearly.

I let them know they have options. Then I get to work and start putting together a debt restructuring plan that will serve them best in their situation. Moving forward I will be the one who creates a plan to deal with their creditors, working to help get that debt reduced by up to 80% and paid off within 5 years; all while putting a plan into place to rebuild their credit score!
