Debt Stress to Relaxation: A Debt Help in Victoria

By Benjy Houser

Debt Stress to Relaxation: A Debt Help in Victoria

I’m Benjy Houser, your 4 Pillars Debt Specialist in Victoria.  I’ve had a lot of clients come through my door and I’m proud to say I’ve been able to help most of them not only eliminate their debt, but move on to vibrant financial futures.

The Kendells were like many of the families I’ve worked with.  Two young children, two cars, a hefty mortgage, and a penchant for living slightly beyond their means.  They both held down good jobs and had some savings in the bank.  The grandparents had even set up a trust to pay for the kid’s post-secondary education. All in all, life was pretty sweet.

However, things started to sour when Gwen’s mother passed away and they assumed financial responsibility for the care of her father.  Around this time their son was diagnosed with Asperger’s Syndrome, forcing Gwen to cut back on work to help her son.  They started to feel the strain on their finances but still the family soldiered on.  In hindsight, the second mortgage did little to help the situation.  Within a year Tom found himself unemployed when his position of 14 years was eliminated.  His severance package helped for a while but they quickly depleted their savings.  While Tom struggled to find work, Gwen became the sole earner; her income barely covering the basics.  As a result, the pressure on their finances increased along with the pressure on their marriage.

Payments started to get missed.  Calls from creditors increased.  Selling Tom’s car did little to ease the situation.  Every month they saw their debt take its toll on their security, their marriage, their family.  Desperate Tom swallowed his pride and contacted a Licensed Insolvency Trustee (LIT).  After their initial meeting Gwen and Tom left feeling more over whelmed, more embarrassed about the situation they had got themselves in, more hopeless than ever before.  Was bankruptcy the only solution?  They’d  risk losing what little they had left and although it would solve the problem and may be the cheapest way to deal with the debt the thought of bankruptcy was personally debilitating to them.  It would take years to recover and the Kendells didn’t have years.

Debt Help: The power of Hope

That’s when they called 4 Pillars.  Like so many of my clients the Kendells left our initial consultation with a renewed sense of hope.  I listened to their long term goals and helped them strategize on the best way to bring them closer not push them further away and find the best solution to deal with the immediate financial crisis and it wasn’t bankruptcy.  By helping them carefully structure and prepare a Consumer Proposal to be filed with a LIT we could eliminate almost 80% of their debt, leaving them to payback the new amount over the next five years.  Almost immediately the creditors stopped calling.  And within the next few months I had put together a plan help rebuild their credit and start the journey of financial rehabilitation.

Debt free for over a year, Tom has since found a new Job and Gwen has been able to once again cut back her work hours to focus on their son.
