Regret: Turning back the Clock on Debt

By Shawn Frank

Regret is a powerful thing.  It can paralyze you, force you to live in the past and plague you with self-doubt.  When all of your stories begin with IF ONLY I’D… you’re not looking forward, you’re stuck in a world of regret.  Some regret is temporary, “If only I hadn’t eaten the whole tub of ice cream”.  “If only I hadn’t stayed up to watch the end of that movie.”  A few extra calories and an unmotivated morning are small reasons to regret your action.  But when you let your regret stop you from getting ahead because you’re mired in past actions then it’s time to take stock of your situation and if possible, turn back the clock.

Do Over!

Living with debt is living a life full of regret.  As the bills pile up the mantra begins in your head. “If only I hadn’t splurged”.  “If only I hadn’t gotten a second credit card”. “If only I hadn’t borrowed that money”.  If only you had a nickel for every time you beat yourself up over your financial situation, you’d probably be debt free by now.  But while you’re examining what you could have done differently, you’re losing sight of what’s ahead of you.  Regret is one of the debts most effective weapons.  As the bills pile up, over whelming you, the struggle to understand why and how this happened pulls you under, preventing you from seeing your way out.  Unfortunately you can’t turn back the clock and make different choices, but that doesn’t mean things can’t change.

Letting Go of “IF ONLY”

Some of us are programmed to regret, to dwell, and obsess over the past.  But the fact is, regret is a waste of your time and energy.  When you’re ready to let go of the regret, the shame, and the hopelessness that comes with debt then, and only then, will you be able to look to the future you want, and take the steps you need to get you there.  Your first step is picking up the phone and calling 4 Pillars Debt Solutions.
