Loan Payment Deferral in Canada: How It Works, What It Costs & Alternatives (2026)

What Is a Loan Payment Deferral in Canada?

A loan payment deferral is a lender-approved pause on scheduled payments, usually for one to six months, during which interest typically continues to accrue and the missed payments are added back to what you owe. It isn't forgiveness. Every dollar you skip is still owed, and in most cases the interest that builds up gets added to your balance, so the loan costs more in total.

That's why deferrals work best for short, temporary setbacks: a brief layoff, an illness, or a gap in income during a parental leave. They're a poor fit for an ongoing shortfall, because the pause ends and the bigger balance is waiting.

We're an independent advocate with no creditor conflicts, so we'll tell you plainly when a deferral helps and when it only delays the problem. If you want a deeper look at the trade-offs, read our 5 reasons to deal with your debt now instead of using payment deferral programs.

How Loan Payment Deferrals Work by Loan Type and Lender

Terms vary a lot by product and lender, and policies change. Always confirm the details with your own lender before you decide.

Mortgages

Major banks such as RBC, TD, BMO, Scotiabank and CIBC generally offer deferrals case by case for hardship, often for about one to six months. The skipped interest is usually capitalized, meaning it's added to your mortgage balance. Your amortization may stretch, or your payments may rise once you resume.

Personal loans and auto loans

Lenders may offer a one- to three-month deferral or an extended term. Expect a fee or added interest in many cases. Eligibility usually requires an account in good standing and documented hardship.

Lines of credit and credit cards

These products rarely offer a true skip. Lenders typically provide reduced minimum payments or a short hardship plan, and interest continues on the full balance. Lower payments can feel like relief while the balance barely moves.

Student loans

Federal help is stronger here. The Government of Canada's Repayment Assistance Plan (RAP) lowers payments based on your income and family size, and it can reduce payments to $0 for eligible borrowers. Since 2023 the federal government no longer charges interest on Canada Student Loans, which makes this one of the least costly forms of relief. Provincial loans, such as OSAP, have their own rules, so check with your province.

Typical eligibility

Most lenders ask for:

  • Proof of hardship, such as a layoff notice or medical documentation
  • A recent payment history without serious arrears
  • Sometimes a minimum time on the loan

Before you agree, ask about fees and exactly how interest accrues during the pause.

Credit impact

An approved, documented deferral is generally reported to Equifax and TransUnion as an arrangement. A missed payment without approval is reported as late, and that does real damage. Lenders may also note the arrangement internally and see repeated requests as a sign of risk, so later credit applications can be affected. Regulatory context

The Financial Consumer Agency of Canada (FCAC) requires banks to disclose costs clearly and to handle complaints through a formal process. Provincial consumer protection rules govern non-bank lenders. The Bankruptcy and Insolvency Act protects you from creditors once a consumer proposal or bankruptcy is filed. A deferral gives you no such protection.

When a deferral works, and when it doesn't

Consider a Toronto couple (anonymized) who used a three-month mortgage deferral after one partner's short medical leave. They returned to full income and caught up with little harm. It worked because the problem was temporary.

Compare that with an Alberta client (anonymized) who deferred auto loan payments twice, then stacked credit card balances to cover living costs. By the time they came to us, their unsecured debt had grown by about a third. The deferral bought time but didn't fix the income gap.

Deferral only delays the problem when your income won't recover soon, when you rely on credit to cover essentials, or when interest on deferred amounts grows your balance faster than you can repay it.

Deferral vs. Consolidation, Consumer Proposals and Bankruptcy

A deferral keeps your accounts intact and is quick to arrange. But it adds cost, delays rather than reduces your debt, and offers no legal protection from creditors. Here's how the alternatives compare.

Debt consolidation. One loan at a lower rate can simplify payments. You need good enough credit to qualify, and you still repay 100% of what you owe. Our guide on whether debt consolidation is right for you can help you decide.

Credit counselling and debt management programs. These reduce interest but typically still repay the full principal.

Consumer proposal. This is a legally binding offer, made through a Licensed Insolvency Trustee, to repay a portion of your debt, usually over up to five years. Interest stops, and collection calls and wage garnishments end. Read what a consumer proposal is and compare it in debt consolidation vs consumer proposal. If you'd like background on the wider idea, here's what it means to restructure debt.

Bankruptcy. It's a last resort with a longer credit impact, but it may be right when debts are overwhelming and assets are limited. Before going there, see what to consider before you file for bankruptcy and avoiding bankruptcy with a consumer proposal. Signs you should look beyond deferral

  • You're using credit for groceries or bills
  • You've deferred more than once
  • Your unsecured debt exceeds about half of your annual income

Our results reflect this approach: a 97% success rate in reducing debt to a fraction of what is owed, and a second-insolvency rate under 2% compared to an industry average of 24%.

Choosing the Right Next Step

Use a deferral only if you can name the date your income returns and can afford the higher balance afterward. Before agreeing, get the terms in writing: the length, fees, how interest is treated, and how it will be reported to the credit bureaus.

Loan Payment Deferral FAQ

Will a loan payment deferral hurt my credit?

An approved deferral is usually not reported as a missed payment, so it often has little direct effect on your score. However, lenders may note the arrangement, and a payment skipped without approval will be reported as late. Confirm in writing how your lender will report it to Equifax and TransUnion.

Does interest still accrue during a deferral?

In most cases, yes. Interest continues to build on your balance and is typically added to the loan, so you pay more overall. Federal Canada Student Loans are an exception, as they no longer charge interest.

Can I defer a loan payment more than once?

Some lenders allow it, but many limit the number or length of deferrals, and repeated requests can signal financial stress. If you need a second deferral, it's a good time to explore longer-term options.

What if my lender says no to a deferral?

Ask about alternatives such as reduced payments, a longer term or a hardship plan, and use the lender's formal complaint process if needed. If you still can't keep up, an insolvency professional can explain options like a consumer proposal, which legally stops collection actions.

Is a deferral better than a consumer proposal?

A deferral suits a short, temporary setback. A consumer proposal suits ongoing difficulty because it can reduce what you owe, freeze interest and provide legal protection. A free consultation can help you compare them.
