For the past year, my husband and I have tried to consolidate our debts. Out of luck the bank couldn’t approve us. I was told by a friend to try a broker but we got the same response from the bank “DECLINED”. But the broker advised us three things; first is to find a credit counselor, secondly is to file bankruptcy and lastly sell the house. This is not what I wanted to do! Over the last few years I had managed to run up $150k in unsecured debt. Mainly credit cards and line of credit. I had approached the banks to secure a loan to pay off the debts, but because of the high minimum payments, I was not able to qualify for the payments, which would have been less than my minimum payments each month! Because of the high balances I was carrying, the interest rates kept creeping up and it was becoming a challenge just to make the minimum payments. I was losing sleep, and it was stressful for me and my family, just trying to make ends meet. I was constantly searching the internet for solutions to my predicament when I came across John and Jennifer’s website. I was in debt for $116,000 due to a bad marriage. My wife left me with a mortgage that I could not pay and ended up in foreclosure. I guess I’m a slow learner. John remembered me making an appointment about 3 years before I actually got the guts to come and do something about my grim situation. He told me in our first meeting about talking to someone with an accent and an expensive latte addiction, not the timmys or starbucks type, much more expensive, but ooohhh so good. I am happy to say I have cut back from 5 or 6 a week to 1 or 2 🙂 I was mortified my financial situation had come to this. My husband wasn’t working leaving me to support us and our two kids for more than half a year. My meetings with Jen after provided me with tools and a plan for my future so that I don’t make the same mistakes. She is wonderful to work with and truly understands what I was dealing with. She made the process easy and worked with my budget. It’s refreshing to have a financial plan, one that works for me and for my children. I wouldn’t be where I am today without the support and guidance from everyone at 4 Pillars Calgary. There were never any judgements. They accepted my situation and have made it possible for me to be a happy mother supporting amazing children. I am positive again, hopeful, and can finally see a future with a financial plan. Hi Jennifer, The cause of my financial difficulty was due to our lack of proper budgeting as a couple. We used finance companies to keep up with our bills which was the wrong way to deal with our situation and it had become difficult to manage this debt load of $36,723 plus the accumulating interest which kept adding up month after month. About 7 years ago I got to a low point in my life. Getting into trouble, falling in and out of contact with friends and family, not caring of where my life was headed. And the worst part, not caring about being responsible with my bills. It was a hard hit to say the least. It made me feel like there was no way out. Once you realize in life, no matter who you are. There comes a point when you want to be normal, not afraid, and to be a man. When that moment hits you realize there is only one way to do this… You have to care and take responsibility. That being said once you’ve dug your hole it’s extremely difficult to get out by your self. No matter how hard you work, or try to regain trust and show your trying as hard as you can will still be extremely difficult. It was hard to believe that there was a way, and people there to help WITHOUT going through a bankruptcy and destroying whatever you have left. I had to look further into this. Once I met with the staff at 4 Pillars here in Calgary, it definitely made me feel as if they truly are there to help. I had to accept and see where this would go as my options were limited. With a couple visits and meetings with 4 Pillars it made me happier and more at ease every time. THESE PEOPLE ARE AMAZING! I finally feel confident that my life will shortly be back on track.
